According to reports Amazon is planning to release new tablets for specific market segments. Amazon will expand its m-commerce platform with a line of tablet device with up to five or six different SKUs. The tablets will probably be available in multiple sizes and will massively increase the amount of digital content the mammoth marketplace is able to sell.
Sales of traditional software – CDs, DVDs, even books – are falling, leaving the way open to any merchants who wish to exploit the market of digital content. Pre-empting the merchants as always is Amazon, the marketplace.
The use of different tablets with different sizes and functionalities allows Amazon to target varying customer segments with distinctive customer journeys. However, the danger is that Amazon will continue to take traffic and customer shares away from the very merchants that the rest of its operations promote.
